Take a look back at 2020 with Nordic Safe Cities

United to stay safe

2020 has been a year that has been more turbulent than any of us had predicted, but which also showed us that we can stand together in the fight against polarization and violent extremism, even during a pandemic.

Throughout the year, we have continued to connect our members and partners with each other and with leading thinkers to ensure that we learn from our Nordic colleagues, stay ahead and continuously adapt prevention efforts according to the newest trends and research. Through webinars and online conversations, we have met to discuss difficult topics and share best practice. We have also used these forums to handle immediate crises in cities, such as when a Danish far-right extremist travelled to Sweden.

In addition, the Safe Spaces Task Force has met to rethink how cities make their urban spaces safe, secure and liveable and develop new solutions for safe urban public spaces. We look forward to share the learnings with you all in a publication that will be launched in early 2021.

In Norway we have worked on 1:1 support with 10 cities with our partner, the Norwegian Gjensidige Foundation, to help innovate and improve local action to prevent extremism. In December this year, the first 4 cities and projects have received funding from the Foundation. We look forward to share the results from the Safer Cities Norway collaboration with the rest of the network during 2021.

In October we initiated the #SafeCityTour campaign and the first five cities Aalborg, Fredrikstad, Vantaa, Reykjavik and Larvik have already promoted their efforts and stories to prevent extremism in our Nordic and global social media campaign. We look forward to showcase the visions and insights from all remaining cities in 2021. You can follow the campaign at our Twitter and LinkedIn.

Join the Alliance

The alliance now consists of 20 member cities spanning across the Nordic region and we are pleased to welcome our newest member – Odense in Denmark – who has just joined the alliance. We hope to engage even more member cities throughout 2021 to ensure a strong network of engaged cities. If you are interested in becoming a member, you are welcome to contact us, and you can download more information about our alliance below.
