As part of Trygg By Norge ten projects aim to enhance both the understanding and the appreciation of democratic values across Norway. The projects are funded by The Gjensidige Foundation.
Trygg By Norge opens a new chapter today with the announcement of ten different projects across nine Norwegian cities. The purpose of the projects is ultimately to create safer cities and make them more resistant to extremism and hatred, and at the same time strengthen inclusion and democracy.
– We are really excited to announce this inspiring list of projects. We wish to counter the effects of extremism, hate and polarization in the Norwegian society by lifting the awareness and appreciation of democratic values through these projects, says Jeppe Albers, executive director at Nordic Safe Cities.
The projects are funded by The Gjensidige Foundation who supports the Trygg By Norge-collaboration with 35 millions NOK. The funds go to collaborative projects between the municipalities and voluntary organizations, and to support meeting places and knowledge sharing in the network.
– We are happy to support these exciting projects, says Ingrid Tollånes, head of Society and Gifts at The Gjensidige Foundation.
– We need to strengthen our democracy and defend the values which create the fundamental cohesion in our country, she says.
A diverse range of projects
The characteristics of the ten projects are very diverse. Just to highlight a few;
In Arendal young people get to do street sport in the middle of town, in Bærum a memorial center has been raised in remembrance of the victims of the terror attack in 2019, the project in Oslo’s main aim is to make the public conversation online sounder and more educated, and in Haugesund the local youth will be educated on how to understand other people’s opinion and perspective better through a concept called ‘I see – You see’.
– The nature of the projects is very different from city to city, because they are designed to solve local issues.
– The common denominator of the projects is to get people, especially young people, to understand and appreciate the values of democracy, says Jeppe Albers, director of Nordic Safe Cities.
– And if both local cohesion and democracies are strengthened, this in turn will help increase security, he concludes.
With the ten initiatives Nordic Safe Cities and The Gjensidige Foundation want to test and develop new initiatives where the results will be widely shared in Norway and the Nordic countries so that the Nordic prevention model can be strengthened all together.
